Writing for readers?

For about a year I’ve been thinking about re-writing this whole blog. Archiving the posts to-date and just starting over. This blog has been insanely therapeutic for me, but it may be time to switch gears.

There are a couple of ways I could approach the project:

  1. Write a how-to manual for quitting drinking and dieting
  2. Write a series of self-contained (but related) personal and political essays exploring body hatred and its connection to alcoholism for women.

I’m still not sure which direction I want to go in, but I know that learning to write in a provocative, artful and structured way is a goal of mine, so I’m inclined to go for the second approach. But I also believe that a simple how-to manual would likely give more back to the world, even if it’s got zero literary merit (by design, really).

I may work on the how-to manual first, and keep that process public (publish posts as I go), and work on the essays separately (with help from writing classes/groups and similar). We’ll see.

Any readers have recommendations for me as a next step?

Fatty

  1. Could you redesign your page to have two sections? One called “practical wisdom” where you write the nitty gritty how to type posts and then another something like “looking Deeper” where you link posts of a more essay-like, personal nature?
I’m looking to evolve my writing as well. Do you have any writers groups out there? Can you host one in your shop? Looking forward to seeing how it all develops …

    1. That’s a great idea! Thanks. Your writing is one of my inspirations, by the way. Your writing flows so naturally but is also artfully/thoughtfully organized – written for readers. Thank you for continuing to write!!

      1. You are too kind. I actually signed up for Laura McKowen’s new writers workshop that starts in a few weeks…hoping to knock a book loose (maybe) or at least grow and write more with a structured course. Do you follow her on IG ? Maybe something to consider?
